China is one of the largest countries in the world, so it’s no surprise that its most internationally recognized brand, Alibaba, does things big.

 

Alibaba started as a domestic company with global ambitions, and it has become a runaway success story since setting the record for the largest initial public offering in history. It’s run by a man whose dedication to a cause bigger than himself has poised Alibaba to revolutionize China’s e-commerce, banking, and insurance industries — not to mention, expand its global operations.

To lead individuals, companies, and a marketplace, you want to be a rouser. Rousers believe in empowering. They understand the human need for psychological fulfillment. They have that “special something” that bestows upon them the ability to motivate people.

Pod bothering

A few weeks ago, I was a speaker at our Global Strategy Practice Development Conference in Sea World, Orlando. Jetlagged in Sydney, I find myself thinking not about the two-day interactive-workshop-based program but about the group behavior of SeaWorld favorite, dolphins.

 

“Oh, get a life,” you might say. “It was bees last time. What’s wrong with you?” To which I’d reply: “It’s dolphins this week or an interactive case-based application of growth intellectual property to support Deloitte sales and delivery. Which would you prefer?”

Bees are our buzzword

It’s spring in London and here I am, not in Park Lane, but somewhere just as nice and iconic: Bush House, famous home of the BBC’s World Service and, since March, to the fledgling Deloitte Center for Collective Leadership (DCCL).

 

We started out at the start of 2011, “tasked” to take care of the Deloitte As One program and build a resource center for practitioners – and, indeed, the world’s leaders. But don’t worry. I’m not going to use this blog to tell you how great we are, what our vision is and how far we’ve come on the “journey” towards it.
